Contributors

Levels

In the project we have multiple levels of contributors. They are, casual, Google Summer of Code Student, Crazy Patch Writers, developers, and lead developer.

Casual Contributors

Casual contributors are the ones who may submit a patch here or there and will help out users from time to time in a support capacity via either chat, email, or the issue tracker. They could also be users that report bugs and typos to us as well.

Google Summer of Code Students

Google runs the Summer of Code which we have frequently participated in. Accepted students spend their summer working with the developers on a pre-determined project. Due to the scope of their work, Summer of Code students would need continue contibuting to the project to reach the Crazy Patch Writer title.

Crazy Patch Writers

Crazy Patch Writers are casual contributors who have gone above and beyond. They are self motivated individuals who will submit bug fixes, implement new features, and make it a point to make sure users are getting supported. There is no magic threshold for when a casual contributor becomes a Crazy Patch Writer, but you will know them when you see them because they are making a positive impact for the project.

Developers

Crazy Patch Writers that stay at it for long enough will typically be promoted to a developer title. In the past this meant getting direct commit access to the repositories, but that has since been discouraged once we implemented a code review process. This makes the developer title more prestigious than anything else today, but it does show the amount of effort that the contributor has put in.

Developers are also expected to help mentor other contributors. Whether that's helping Crazy Patch Writers or mentoring Summer of Code students.

Lead Developers

Typically the project has a sole lead developer. Their main responsibilties are to drive the project forward, enable other contributors, as well as making the project welcoming to new users and contributors alike.

Recently this also includes producing the newly established quarterly State of the Bird events as well.
